Driving Climate Action on Two Wheels

Driving Climate Action on Two Wheels

Climate change: A growing issue

Without a doubt, climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time. 2023 was declared the warmest year on record, as global warming exceeded the 1.5°C climate threshold for 12 months in a row. With human-caused climate change at its very core, global warming poses risks such as extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, and humanitarian emergencies.

The science is clear: now, more than ever, we need to take action to safeguard our planet and communities for generations to come. There are many possibilities for action, and your impact can add up to make a significant difference. A key starting point is to reconsider how you get around.

Cycling for our planet

With most modes of transport still being run on fossil fuels, how we get around has a strong impact on the wellbeing of our planet. As of 2022, domestic transport was the largest emitting sector in the UK, producing a whopping 28% of total GHG emissions (Gov UK). This is an awakening reminder that how we choose to travel is one of the biggest climate decisions we face daily.

Aiming to become the world’s greenest global city, London is busily working on providing us with a range of green transport options. Amongst zero-emissions buses, greener taxis, and electric vehicle infrastructure, the city offers a cycleway which stretches over 360km, incentivising all of us to get on a bike for a greener and healthier future. With nearly a quarter of all Londoners now living within 400m of a high-quality cycling route, it is now easier than ever to choose cycling for the sake of our planet.

Indeed, alongside walking, cycling is one of the most sustainable ways to travel. According to research from the University of Oxford and Imperial College London, switching one of your daily trips from car to cycling could reduce your carbon footprint by around 0.5 tonnes over a year, roughly equivalent to the emissions produced by a flight from London to New York. Given that cycling could realistically substitute nearly half of our short car trips, the impact of such a switch would be sizeable, bringing about a huge potential to decrease carbon emissions and air pollution. To top this off, we would see reduced traffic congestion and greater development in green urban planning in the long term, supporting London in its green city mission and doing our part for our planet and its climate.
